I am going to transcribe this EXACTLY the way it was written.
This brief was compiled by ELMER RUSSELL HOWELL b. at BOUNDS, MS . OCT. 12,1923.
These are not my words but of UNCLE ELMER'S.
THE HOWELLS OF CALHOUN COUNTY
Transcribed by Virginia Lee Tribble
PAGE 1
Since retirement from EXXON Corp. U.S.A. in March 1984, I have gathered information concerning the HOWELL family.
Assuming that others might want this information for further research or for their files, I have briefly compiled
this data. The HOWELLS are of WELCH descent and probably came to America in the 17th or 18th century
along with
the BOUNDS, KILGORES, and many other CALHOUN CO. families. They first settled in N. CAROLINA , drifted
to S. CAROLINA, and some to GEORGIA, before going to ALABAMA , TENNESSEE, then to MISSISSIPPI and TEXAS.
The HOWELLS from which I
decendedecended came from GEORGIA, settled in TN for a few years, then moved to the NORTH EAST QUARTER of SECTION 7 ,
TOWNSHIP 23 NORTH , RANGE 8 EAST CALHOUN CO. MS. They settled on a small ridge about 200 yards WEST, on a little
branch called COLES CREEK. The original log house was located about 60 ft. west of the remains of a frame house later
built by RUSSELL BAILEY HOWELL for his family in about 1910. The living room, dining room, and kitchen of
this abandoned BAILEY HOWELL house are still in place as of 1985. The land was sold by the BAILEY HOWELL
estate to CECIL BURKS in the 1920's. It now belongs to ROBERT BURKS, son of CECIL. There are a number of
walnut trees around the old house, but there is no evidence of the original log house, at this time. The
old house was destroyed when the BAILEY HOWELL house was built. There was a second log house built on the
place about 300 yards west of the above described house location. It was of particular interest to me as
I visited it when I was a little boy eight or ten years old. The old log constructed house which at one
time had served as a residence for WILLIAM or one of his children had been converted to a smokehouse and/or
kitchen and was separated about 20 ft. from a more recently built house. This house probably was built by
RUSSELL JONES HOWELL. I found no evidence of this old log house or the newer expansion in 1985. My father
ROY C. HOWELL, b. Oct. 13,1891, said his grandfather, RUSSELL JONES HOWELL told him of shooting bears
attempting to get their pigs when they first settled in CALHOUN CO. In about 1924 ,ROY C. HOWELL built a
4th house on the old farm. It was about 200 yards north of the BAILEY HOWELL built houses and consisted
of a kitchen dining room combination plus one additional bedroom. The house faced the east and had a
porch across the entire front. We were fortunate enough to live there 3 years thus allowing me to enjoy
my grandparents. At the age of 6 it was time to start school. We then moved to BIG CREEK, MS allowing
us to walk to a good school.
PAGE 2
SAMUEL HOWELL was b.1750 in N. CAROLINA & d. 1824 either in S. CAROLINA or GEORGIA. He m. MARY HUDSON who was b. 1749 d.1836. SAMUEL served in the 2nd S.
CAROLINA REGIMENT, commanded by Lt. Col. MARION during the AM. REV. He enlisted Nov. 4,
1775 & was dis. July 17, 1778. This can be verified by national #73432 D.A.R. lineage books published 1909. Thus far we have been
able
to find evidence of 2 children of SAMUEL. They were WILLIAM & JOHN. Nothing is known of what happened to JOHN***, but we descended
from
WILLIAM.
WILLIAM HOWELL son of SAMUEL, WILLIAM was b. AUG. 1,1785 in GEORGIA & d. SEPT. 28,1862. He m. MARY PLEASANT [POLLY]
HOLbrOOK in
1805. She was b. AUG. 11, 1789 in GEORGIA and d. JULY 22,1854 in CALHOUN CO. MS Her headstone can be found in SHILOH CEMETARY
located
in section 19, township 23, NORTH RANGE 8, E. CALHOUN CO. The headstone is located near the center of the graveyard but only
50 to 60
feet from the west edge. We have no explanation for WILLIAM being buried in GEORGIA except
that maybe after his wife died he visited his old home place in
GEORGIA and died there.
MARY HOLbrOOK'S father was JESSIE HOLbrOOK b. 1764 d. MAY 25,1844 in VIRGINIA. He m. SUSANNAH in 1787 & she d.
AUG. 8,1837. He enlisted at GOOCHLAND CO. VIRGINIA COURTHOUSE 18 months before the surrender of CORNWALLIS in the AM. REV.
He was placed on pension roll of ELBERT CO. GEORGIA in 1831. This can be verified by national #192187 D.A.R. In 1923 MRS. J.T. CALDWELL
[MEGONNE HOWELL] of CRYSTAL SPRINGS MS. obtained (it) from '' MISSISSIPPI DAUGHTERS and their ancestors''.
WILLIAM & MARY apparently migrated from GEORGIA through TN to finally settle in CALHOUN CO. prior to 1839.
In the YALOBUSHA CO. courthouse at COFFEEVILLE MS, I found where WILLIAM had patented land from the U.S.A. in section 7, township 23
north, range east, which is the location of the original HOWELL settlement.
PAGE 3
The 1840 census shows WILLIAM & MARY with a girl & boy between the ages of 10 & 15. The 1850 census shows
them with 1 daughter MARY THOMAS. As best as can be established, the children of WILLIAM HOWELL & MARY PLEASANT [POLLY] HOLbrOOK are;
RUSSELL JONES HOWELL b.1813 in TN.
RALEIGH HOWELL b.1813 in TN. HUTSON HOWELL m. MARY DENNET, he was a METHODIST PREACHER.
MARY LOUCRETIA b.1817 in TN. m. NATHAN FORTENER b.1815. The 1860 census
showed them living in BENELIA, in CALHOUN CO. MS. with a12 yr. old daughter NANCY. Another [unknown] dau.
m. a CLEMENTS.
After the death of WILLIAM & MARY HOWELL, a parcel of their land in sec. 7 was sold by their descendents.
Signatures on the deed were:
R. J. HOWELL, D. J. HOWELL, MARY HOWELL, F. D. CLEMENTS, WILLIAM H. HOWELL, A. HELLEN HOWELL, JOHN W. FORTENER,
NANCY S. FORTENER, S.H. HOWELL, & M.R. HOWELL. The FORTENERS & CLEMENTS were most likely g. children.
RUSSELL JONES HOWELL s/o WILLIAM, RUSSELL JONES HOWELL b. April 7,1813 in TN. d. Dec.28,1899 in MS. He m.
ELIZABETH JOHNSON b. MARCH 4,1818 in MS March 21, 1881. They lived & farmed their entire lives on the old HOWELL
homestead. They are buried
at the SHELTON CEMETARY, NORTH of brUCE, MS. They stand alone in
approximately the middle of the cemetery. ELIZABETH JOHNSON HOWELL'S father was MINOR WINN SMITH JOHNSON.
ELIZABETH'S tombstone reads: ''MUST GO AND LEAVE YOU HERE BEHIND, MAY JESUS TOUCH YOUR SOULS TO REIGN WITHIN
LASTING PEACE.''

Someone dismantled the old log house about 3 years ago and moved it to the southern part of the county where it was
re-erected. A law suit resulted and they were to pay $1000 and move it back and reinstall it
at the original location. It has not been re-erected as of 1985.
